Is It a Weed?

Have you ever mowed over your spouse’s new plantings, mistaking them for weeds? Me too. As you are probably well aware, that never goes over too well. So, how can you easily tell the difference between weed and garden plants or flowers…and keep the peace?

The obvious way, of course, is for gardeners to document what is grown, where and then share that valuable information with everyone in the household, but there are other methods too.

If anything is growing in rows, this is most definitely a sure sign of garden plants. Anything growing outside of that pattern is likely to be a weed.

Carrot tops can easily be mistaken for weeds. Spinach can look like grass. Differentiating weeds from flowers can sometimes be challenging as well. When making your determination, remember that weeds generally grow more rapidly than plants and flowers and in greater numbers. If you are not sure, another good rule to follow is to just let it grow. As they mature, it will become much easier to discern weeds from plants and flowers.

However, weeds can compete with your flowers, vegetables and other plants for vital water and nutrients. So it is important to extract them as soon as you can. Don’t forget, you can always get your weed barrier, mulch and stone – to keep weeds at bay – at Edgewater Yard Shop.
