Compost Derivation and Function
Compost is decomposed matter that feeds your plants. Created from organic materials such as yard waste and food scraps, compost will enrich your soil, enhance its fertility and improve its overall health. And if you are thinking that fertilizer can be used in place of compost, think again. Although fertilizer is a great addition and definitely recommended, it just can’t come close to the valuable nutrients and beneficial microorganisms found within compost and the healthy, nourishing soil structure it creates.
Topsoil Origin and Purpose
While topsoil may also be nutrient-dense, it can vary in nutrient content as well as texture depending on its source. Typically the upper layer (hence the “top” in topsoil) of landscaping used to create a moisture retaining structural base for planting, topsoil is formed by the natural weathering of rocks and organic matter over time. Courser grades of topsoil are excellent for leveling purposes, while finer topsoil is an exceptional top dressing for lawns and gardens.
In summary, here’s the dirt – While compost adds organic matter to help your soil support nutrients and microbial life, topsoil is more appropriate for filling and leveling within your garden and throughout your yard.
