We block our grizzly opponents on the line of scrimmage. We block calls from those pesky unavailable numbers. We put up road blocks for protection against scary people. Oh, and let’s not forget, “Talk to the hand.”
But here’s another important barrier – the weed barrier. Weed barriers (also called landscape fabric) are pretty much what they say they are – an important gardening tool designed to prevent weeds from taking over your garden. They reduce weed infiltration while still allowing water, fertilizer and oxygen to seep through to your plants.
Weed barriers are a geotextile mesh that resembles burlap. Often composed of propylene of polyester, today’s weed barriers can last around five to seven years. These modern weed barriers are a great improvement over laying down plastic because they are both biodegradable and resistant to sun exposure. Landscape fabric can be purchased in 300 to 750-foot rolls for large plantings or commercial jobs, as well as smaller squares for more typical residential gardens.
Using weed barriers is all pretty simple. First, you just need to make certain the area you plan to transform into a garden is free of weeds. Then, you cut slits through which your plants can grow. After planting your plants of choice, cover the weed barrier with one to three inches of mulch. Aside from being aesthetically appealing, mulch will help to hold down your weed barrier, maintain moisture and further retard weed growth. All done!
Research indicates that weed barriers are one of the most effective weed elimination products available; and although they may not completely eradicate weeds in your garden, they will certainly give your back a big break!
